Buried Bones

CORRIGIN, WA – Grizzles Boysie Galbraith lies here. So too Twistie Hamilton, Doo Darls Caley and 16-year-old Bubbles – in a dog cemetery with no equal. A terra-cotta kelpie guards the gate, honouring the memory of Bowser, Stubby and Candy-May. Lassie and Snoopy are celebrity neighbours. Snakebite abridged the biographies of yardmates, Rex and Caesar. The necropolis was set up in 1974, with almost 100 epitaphs to browse, including this doggerel devoted to Jedda (1982-1998):

She chased rabbits, but only to play

She chased dolphins, just to say g’day

She swam like a fish, danced like a horse

Now she’s travelled the full course.

[Corrigin is 230kms southeast of Perth. The cemetery is some five kilometres along the Brookton Highway, towards Quairading. Bereft owners are welcome to enrol their own magnificent mutts.]
