Reconstitution Dock

Four-hundred figurines conduct their lives in frozen harmony at Old Hobart Town in Richmond (TAS). Built by the Quick brothers in 1988, the model village recreates Hobart prior to the marshes being converted into Constitution Dock.

In fact, if anybody has read American Dreams – that Peter Carey story about the eerie model-maker – then you’ll know how weird it feels, driving 30 clicks northeast from Hobart in order to see Hobart from 180 years ago.

And yes, being outdoors and Tasmanian, the place has free umbrellas for easier ambling. [Off Bridge St, open 9-5 daily. Entry $7.50 and $3,50. 03-6260-2502]
