Nightmare Night
There’s a secret garden 12kms north of Kempsey. Little known by travelers who speed along the Pacific Highway, the shrine deserves a visit.
The site remains the worst road accident in Australian history. The collision occurred in 1989, between two crowded coaches a few days short of Christmas, making a sound that no Clybucca farmer wants to hear again.
Thirty-five were killed in the crash, and countless others hurt and traumatized. A memorial garden grows among the egg and dairy farms, off Sutherlands Road. ‘May Clybucca be a living prayer,’ reads one verse, ‘for all who on that day were there.’
[Any other remarkable shrines or memorials along the way? Motorists see too many glum bouquets marking accident sites - yet some mourners have gone to extraordinary (and eccentric) lengths to commemorate the lost. Tell us about the strange and sacred along the way - ]
